Crazy Heart

Finally got around to watching this one, and I was not disappointed. It certainly wasn't a great movie by any means, but it's one worth watching again. Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal were great, he certainly deserved his Oscar. Appearances by Ryan Bingham and Robert Duvall (two of the coolest dudes on the planet) only enhance the movie. When it all comes down to it, though, the best thing about Crazy Heart is the music. T-Bone Burnett, along with Ryan Bingham and others, provided some excellent songs for this one, and Bridges and Colin Farrell do a good job of singing them in the movie. In an age where country music has become watered down and incredibly fake, the music in this movie is real. The constant images of New Mexico, especially the sunsets, made me realize how much I do miss the Land of Enchantment. Just an enjoyable movie all around.

Today in History

SPIES!
June 19, 1953. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, convicted of espionage against the United States, are executed at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York. They were the first civilians to be executed for espionage. Whether or not execution was necessary in this case is a question that continues to be debated even today. A 2003 New York Times editorial stated "The Rosenbergs case still haunts American history, reminding us of the injustice that can be done when a nation gets caught up in hysteria." Certainly a fascinating piece of Cold War history.

Song of the Day

I've been digging this song since I bought the FIFA World Cup 2010 game for the PS3. I've been listening to some of his other songs as well. Pretty good stuff.

Jonah Hex Trailer

Jonah Hex

My main historical interests lie in the representation of the American West in popular culture. What a delight to hear that Jonah Hex, a western comic book, would be made into a movie. Even better, Josh Brolin plays the title role. A long way from his Goonies days, his performance in No Country for Old Men has made him into a great pick to play this part. I don't know a lot about the comic books, but this certainly will pique my interest about them in the future. The movie opens tonight, but I will have to wait a bit to see it. I've promised Marie a trip to see Eclipse; in return, she will go see Jonah with me. Will it be good? That remains to be seen.

Been Awhile...

It's been well over a year since I've posted anything on this blog. A lot has happened...I graduated from NMSU with my Masters degree. Now I just need a job. Bored out my mind, I guess blogging is something to keep me occupied. My plan is to just blog on pop culture stuff and maybe do a "Today in History" kind of thing. So what happened today, June 18th? Hmmm....let's see. Ah, this is interesting. Babe Ruth was signed on this day in 1938 as a first base coach for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He quit at the end of the season.
